I originally made the Energy Budgeting Calculator to help me manage my own energy while running a business — while also being a neurodivergent person with an energy-draining chronic illness.

The 'TGL' in my business name, Project TGL, stands for 'the good life' because I believe in building a good life for yourself.

A life where work doesn't feel like pushing uphill. A life where you have plenty of rest and downtime for the things that are meaningful to you.

FAQ

  • Who is this for?
This Calculator is for anyone who wants to track their personal energy on a detailed, data-driven level. It can be used for managing your energy with:

    — Burnout prevention and recovery
    — Neurodivergent "boom and bust" energy cycles
    — Dynamic disability
    — Chronic illness and chronic pain
    — 'Founder fatigue' when running a business and wearing all the hats.
  • Who is this not for?
If you don't enjoy tech, focusing on detail, or staring at a screen, then this might not be for you. Try Googling 'energy accounting' or 'spoon theory' for less detailed versions of tracking your energy.

The Energy Budgeting Calculator is also not for you if you wake up feeling refreshed and full of energy pretty much every day and rarely feel like you have nothing left in the tank.
  • How long does it take to use the Energy Budget Calculator?
Before you can start using the Energy Budget Calculator, you'll need to spend about 30 minutes setting it up to suit your personal energy profile and needs. (You'll get access to some tutorial videos to show you how.)

After the initial setup, allow about 10 minutes each week for budgeting your energy.
  • Is it difficult to use?
No, but if you haven't used Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel before you might need a little bit more patience for the first couple of weeks as you get used to navigating around different sheets. If you have used Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel before then you'll pick it up really quickly.

Either way, you'll have access to tutorial videos which show you how to use it each step of the way.
  • What software do I need?
The Energy Budgeting Calculator is a Google Sheets spreadsheet, which means you need to have a Google account and internet access to use it.
